Frederick Worrell is an award-winning artist and spatial designer based in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. Originally from Whakatane New Zealand, Frederick blends his Māori heritage with contemporary design practices, using light, reflection, and architectural elements to explore identity, nature, and cultural storytelling.
After nearly a decade in London working in design and interiors, Frederick shifted his focus to full-time visual arts. His signature convex mirror paintings and light-based works have been featured internationally, including representing Aotearoa New Zealand at the 19th Asian Art Biennale in Bangladesh (2022–2023). Notable commissions include site-specific works for the New Zealand High Commission in London and Newcastle Cathedral.
Frederick’s community-led work is central to his practice. He facilitates Artistry Nexus, a weekly mentorship group at Newcastle Cathedral, and regularly collaborates on youth and community art projects.
Recent exhibitions include Te Pito (Nathan Homestead, Auckland, 2022), Through Our Eyes (Burgh House, London, 2023), Light at the End of the Tunnel (Newcastle Cathedral, 2023), Haslem’s of Hallgate Gallery (Hexham, 2024), Weetslade Art Trail (2025), and an upcoming solo show at VFDalston (London, 7 December 2024). His solo work at Matthews Yard (Croydon, 2022) and group shows with Croydon Art Society affirm his UK presence.
